Relationship With Jesus

How to Know Jesus as Your Lord and Savior

First, realize that God loves you!

"It is an everlasting love. But God demonstrated his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8) Some people say, "God loves us only if we are good". Not true!! God loves us in spite of our sins. We can only deal with our sins by accepting Jesus Christ as our personal Savior. Then, God takes over our lives and cleanses us from all sin. He then enables us to live the Christian life.

Second, repent of your sins.

Jesus began His public ministry by being baptized by John the Baptist and immediately preached, "Repent!" "From then on Jesus began to preach, 'Turn from your sins and turn to God, because the Kingdom of God is near' ". (Matthew 4:17 NLT) The word repentance is a military word meaning to do an about face. Turn from your own way and turn to God's way. That is its true meaning.

Third, you must answer the question the Philippian jailor asked Paul and Silas, "Sirs what must I do to be saved?" (Acts 16:30 NLT) They replied, "Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved along with your entire household". Believe means to trust, depend upon or rely upon God to do for you what you can't do for yourself. The Bible says, "The just shall live by faith". It also says, "Without faith it is impossible to please God". (Hebrews 11:6)

So to sum it up, you must repent of your sins and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved. That is how you become a Christian.

Fourth, we confess Jesus as our Savior before men.

The Bible says, "If you confess Me before men I will confess you before My Father, but if you deny Me before men, I will deny you before My Father". (Matthew 10:32) A Christian must not be ashamed of Jesus but boldly confess Him before men. All who believe must be courageous in witnessing for Jesus. Baptism is the most powerful way to confess Christ to the whole world. In the book of Acts everyone who believed was baptized. Jesus set for us the example when He was baptized and told John, "It fulfills all righteousness". Baptism is the first act of obedience to Christ after you become a Christian. Baptism is the message that Jesus saves. When you stand in the water it symbolizes death, when you go under the water it symbolizes burial and when you come up out of the water it symbolizes resurrection. The Bible says, "Buried with Him in baptism and raised again to walk in newness of life". Now grow in the Lord and serve the Lord daily.

Fifth, share your faith.

Acts 1:8 says "You shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea and in Samaria and to the ends of the earth". The most powerful witness you have is your personal testimony of faith in Christ and what He has done for you. I would encourage you to write your testimony so you can share it quickly, even in an elevator. By writing your testimony it becomes clear and effective. When you share your testimony it may be a divine appointment where you can lead the person to faith in Christ as their Savior. When they accept Jesus as Savior, share with them how important it is to be baptized in a Bible believing church and grow as a Christian.
